Let’s talk feet: smelly feet & what to do about them

Smelly feet can be a touchy topic. It’s not something you’d easily bring up over a meal with friends after all. If this has been an ongoing problem for you, please be rest assured that there is something you can do to help, and here’s how!

  1. First, get to know the culprit

You can’t see them, but there are HEAPS of bacteria and fungi sitting on your skin right now. As surprising as it sounds, it is actually normal. The offensive smell is caused by a reaction between sweat and bacteria. In some other cases, the odour can be made worse as a result of a severe fungal infection of the feet. Look out for scaly skin and “bubbles” in the skin – they are usually signs of tinea pedis.

  1. Then, find out how it happened

Healthy skin has a barrier that protects itself against any bacterial or fungal invasion. If this barrier is damaged as a result of excessive sweating, cuts, or abrasions, things can then go in! More often than not, someone with a problem of sweaty feet is more susceptible to getting tinea pedis (fungal infection of the feet) than someone who doesn’t. Fungi love a moist environment, and sweaty feet make it perfect for them. Badly ventilated shoes can also contribute to excessive sweating of the feet. Identifying aggravating factors from your daily routine is the first step to fixing the problem!

  1. Lastly, act accordingly

If you are someone prone to getting sweaty feet, make sure your socks are absorbent and your shoes are well ventilated. You may find it helpful to change socks every few hours or so to keep your feet dry. If you work in a wet environment, make sure you have at least two pairs of shoes to alternate on different days. It’s also important to dry your feet thoroughly after work. Apply an antifungal spray as a precaution. If you are not sure whether you have a fungal infection, consult your podiatrist. Your podiatrist will be able to inform you on what needs to be done.

A lot of factors come into play when dealing with unpleasant odour. Sometimes, it’s all about changing daily habits and eliminating those factors one factor at a time. Just remember that there is always a way! If you need help with your feet, why not book an appointment to see us?
